Stop Freedom's Watch Smears

We've seen this before: When the right-wing is losing, they resort to false negative attack ads to try to tear down their Democratic opponents and sleaze their way to victory.

That's what's happening to Democratic Senate candidates Mark Udall in Colorado and Jeff Merkley in Oregon. In fact, Freedom's Watch -- a shadowy right-wing front group backed by Karl Rove, Ari Fleischer, and other Bush-Cheney cronies -- has already spent more than $1 million in negative TV ads attacking Mark and Jeff, their top 2 targets of the 2008 election.

Mark Udall and Jeff Merkley are narrowly leading their Senate races in Colorado and Oregon -- but they need our help, right now, to fight back against relentless negative attacks from Freedom's Watch and other right-wing groups.

As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Mark Udall has been an outspoken critic of the war in Iraq and the Bush Administration's attacks on our civil liberties. Mark has also championed efforts to support sustainable and renewable energy resources -- exactly the kind of common-sense approach we need to take on global warming.

Mark Udall is running for an open seat in Colorado being vacated by retiring Republican Senator Wayne Allard. But he is currently being outspent by nearly 3-to-1 on TV, besieged by more than $11 million in attack ads from right-wing groups including Freedom's Watch that are distorting Mark's record and smearing his good name. We need to help him fight back.

In Oregon, Jeff Merkley has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of residents in his state. In sharp contrast, Jeff's opponent, Republican Senator Gordon Smith, has voted with President Bush more than 85% of the time -- and the people of Oregon want change. In fact, a recent Survey USA poll shows Jeff Merkley leading Gordon Smith 44% to 42%.

I recently went to Portland to campaign with Jeff. The excitement for his candidacy in Oregon is palpable, but Jeff's lead is still tenuous. He needs our help, right now, to fend off Freedom's Watch's false negative attacks, extend his lead, and win on Election Day.
