Flipping House Seats in California & Virginia
Can You Believe?
Can you believe GOP Representatives Steve Knight (CA-25) and Mimi Walters (CA-45) tweeting away about the benefits of the GOP Tax Scam? Knight and Walters already faced tough fights against “the two Katies” – dynamic Democratic nominees Katie Hill and Katie Porter; the incumbents’ cheerleading for their noxious tax bill, which raises taxes on thousands of their constituents, will only make it tougher.
Can you believe Virginia Republican voters nominating unreconstructed Confederate Corey Stewart to run against Senator Tim Kaine? The good news: That’s one Senate seat Democrats won’t have to struggle to defend – and a few more Virginia House seats we can flip.
Can you believe Trump declaring that North Korea is “no longer a nuclear threat”? Really? One handshake and we’re safe?
Hits and Misses – the week’s best and worst moves
Miss of the Week: AG Jeff Sessions’ decision to deny asylum to victims of domestic abuse and gang violence. Sessions claims that news of his draconian policies will deter Central American refugees from heading north, as if they all watched Fox News while shopping around for their next home. These people are running for their lives. Denying them shelter means denying America’s heritage and core values.
Hit of the Week: Dianne Feinstein’s bill to reverse another cruel immigration policy: forcibly separating refugee families. Her Keep Families Together Act would prevent the Department of Homeland Security from taking children from their parents at the border.
Hot House Race of the Week
In the beginning, the fight to flip House seats in California focused on 7 GOP-held districts that Hillary Clinton won in 2016. Now the map is expanding. In the 4th Congressional District, Democrat Jessica Morse emerged from a tough primary as a strong challenger to incumbent Tom McClintock. He’s a far-right hardliner who voted to repeal Obamacare and give huge tax breaks to the rich. She’s a smart young former State Department staffer who has fired up Democrats and outraised McClintock. As the Blue Wave builds, this is one to watch.
On this week’s podcast, Nicole and I discuss the week’s events and the importance of denying freedom to no one. Then I speak with columnist and cultural critic Ana Marie Cox about her work and addressing our differences civilly; and Nicole interviews Dr. Nadia Hashimi, a pediatrician and novelist who is the Democratic candidate for Maryland’s 6th Congressional District.
