The GOP War on the FBI

Can You Believe?

Can you believe House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes won’t even share his “secret memo” about the FBI with GOP members of the Senate Intelligence Committee, even as he leads the call to make his own memo public? Nunes is like the Wizard of Oz, and there’s nothing behind his curtain.

Can you believe Trump, Senator Ron Johnson, and Fox News frothing over a joke text message between FBI co-workers about their “secret society”? Anything that fits into their hysterical, diversionary narrative about the FBI’s “conspiracy against Trump” becomes the “prime time” news of the day.

Hits and Misses – the week’s best and worst moves

Hit of the Week: Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd’s blunt letter to Nunes about his infamous memo. Boyd, a Trump appointee, called Nunes “extraordinarily reckless” for seeking “to disclose classified and law enforcement sensitive information without first consulting with the relevant members of the intelligence community.”

Miss of the Week: A tie between Nunes and Ron Johnson, two buffoons waging war against the FBI.

Hot House Race of the Week

Good news for Democrats in our push to “flip the 49th”: the GOP vote for this seat will be split at least three ways. This week Congressman Darrell Issa, whom we helped coax into early retirement, endorsed Diane Harkey, a former assemblymember and current state tax board member. She joins Assemblymember Rocky Chavez, County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar, and two others in a crowded GOP primary field. If we Dems can winnow our own field, we can win this seat in November.

Finally…

Republicans’ relentless war on the FBI would be ludicrous if it weren’t so dangerous. In seeking to protect Trump by undermining public faith in federal law enforcement, the GOP puts our nation at risk. If the FBI and CIA are weakened, who will protect us from Russia’s next attack on our democracy? We know Russia will strike again. Is that what Trump and the GOP want? We need the FBI and the CIA to protect us – not only from Russia’s interference in our elections but also from those who would harm our people. This Republican war puts us all at risk.
