Honoring John McCain – or Not
Can You Believe?
Can you believe that Trump initially refused to lower the flag for John McCain, or that he refused to say one word about the man in sending “hearts and prayers” [sic] to the McCain family? Of course you can. What would shock us is if Trump ever showed an ounce of grace, humility, or even humanity.
Can you believe that in a recent poll, taken after Rep. Duncan Hunter was indicted, 47% of respondents still supported his reelection? The good news: Democratic challenger Ammar Campa-Najjar is running a strong race and has closed to within 8 points of Hunter.
They Said It – Republicans Speak Out Against Trump & His Enablers in Congress
“In today’s GOP, which is the president’s plaything, he is the mainstream. So, to vote against his party’s cowering congressional caucuses is to affirm the nation’s honor while quarantining him.” – George Will
Some Republicans outside of Congress are speaking out. Good for them!
Hits and Misses – the week’s best and worst moves
Hit of the Week: Senator Tammy Baldwin’s resolution to rescind a Trump administration rule expanding “junk insurance” plans that don’t have to provide health care coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. Tammy is locked in a tough re-election fight, but that hasn’t slowed down her fight to protect her constituents’ health care.
Miss of the Week: It’s hard for any other politician to win Miss of the Week when Trump makes so many bad moves. This week he wins gold, silver & bronze for three appalling moves: refusing to lower the flag for Senator McCain, threatening to censor Google searches, and our gold medal winner: telling church leaders there would be widespread violence if Democrats win the election.
Hot House Race of the Week
In CA-10, Josh Harder is running hard against Jeff Denham, and it’s paying off. Last week, two top Congressional polls moved the race from Leans Republican to Toss-Up, and Nate Silver’s 538 gave Harder a 51.5% chance of winning. It doesn’t get much hotter than that, but it will heat up even more in September when Harder and Denham engage in their first debates. Learn more here.
On this week’s podcast, Nicole and I pay tribute to Senator McCain and analyze this week’s primary results. Then California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and I discuss how Republicans are intentionally rolling back important progress, and Nicole talks with Mike Levin, our strong candidate to fill Darrell Issa’s soon-to-be-vacant House seat.
