“I kid you not”
Can You Believe?
Can you believe GOP House candidate Diane Harkey trying to win a swing district (CA-49) with quotes like these: “If the president wants his wall, he needs his wall. Just do it, you know? It’s not that big a deal.” And – wait for it – “Every single Republican has got to vote or we’re looking at a socialist southern Orange County and north San Diego, I kid you not.”
Can you believe Trump spent 25 minutes bragging to a captive military audience about the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act without once mentioning Senator McCain? Of course you can. This bone spur victim can’t stand a real hero.
Can you believe that (according to a CNN poll) most Republicans don’t believe Russia interfered in the 2016 election, and more than 6 in 10 say it’s unlikely to happen this year? Where are all those old Cold Warriors now that we really need them?
Can you believe that Jared Kushner has national security clearance but John Brennan does not?
Hits and Misses – the week’s best and worst moves
Hit of the Week: Senator Sherrod Brown’s new bill to save American manufacturing jobs while giving consumers a $3,500 discount on U.S.-made cars and trucks. His American Cars, American Jobs Act would pay for the discount by rescinding a foreign profits tax break for companies that shipped jobs overseas after the Republican tax bill passed in December 2017.
Miss of the Week: Trump’s high-profile, low-level feud with Omarosa Manigault Newman. She is an unreliable source who looks rational only when contrasted with him. If he had an ounce of self-control, he could have let her have 15 minutes of talk-show fame, and she would have fizzled out. But no….
Hot House Races of the Week
By definition, any toss-up election is a hot race, and California has plenty of them this year. According to the Cook Political Report, five of the nation’s 28 toss-ups are here in our 10th, 25th, 39th, 45th, and 48th Districts. All are currently held by Republicans (as is CA-49, where Dem Mike Levin leads in the polls), and all have strong Democratic candidates: Josh Harder, Katie Hill, Gil Cisneros, Katie Porter, and Harley Rouda. PAC for a Change will be working to help all of them Flip the House.
On this week’s podcast, Nicole and I discuss this week’s primary election results and Omarosa’s revelations about Trump. Then we speak with Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD), and Nicole talks to Stephany Rose Spaulding about her race in Colorado’s 5th Congressional District.
