Students Arise While Trumpism Falls

Can You Believe?

Can you believe Trump claiming “The state of California is begging us to build walls” along the border? In fact, an overwhelming majority of Californians are begging Trump and his henchman Jeff Sessions to leave our peaceful immigrant community alone as they add to our state’s vibrancy and success. As our governor has said, California does not give safe harbor to violent criminals.

Can you believe Trump firing Rex Tillerson with a tweet? This cowardly bully didn’t have the guts to meet Tillerson face to face.

Hits and Misses – the week’s best and worst moves

Hit of the Week: Conor Lamb’s historic victory in the Pennsylvania CD18 special election. Republicans threw everything they had at Lamb – the entire Trump family, lies about Lamb’s political views and alleged fealty to Nancy Pelosi, and more than 15 million bucks – and still couldn’t win a district that Trump carried by 20 points.

Miss of the Week: Trump’s trip to California had it all: gushing over his divisive, useless wall; lame attacks on our state and our governor; and fundraising with the megarich. Never once did he venture to visit with ordinary Californians or learn anything about our vibrant Golden State.

Hot House Race of the Week

The 50th CD race got hotter with Carl DeMaio’s last-minute decision not to challenge incumbent Duncan Hunter as a Republican. DeMaio’s withdrawal greatly improves Hunter’s chances of making it through the primary, which in turn greatly improves Democrats’ chance of winning this deep-red seat in November. With his many personal problems, legal issues, and overweening arrogance, Hunter is severely damaged goods.

Wednesday’s student walkout against gun violence was a resounding success as students across America left their classrooms and assembled to cry out for school safety. Today’s young Americans have never known a time without mass shootings and epidemic gun violence, but they can imagine such a time – and they are determined to make that dream a reality. They will not take no for an answer. They will not accept waffling or half measures. They do not fear the NRA, and they have little use for politicians who do. The student gun safety movement is one of the most inspiring political developments of our time, a further sign that American democracy is alive and well. I hope you can join me in marching with them on March 24th.
