Trump Can’t Spell “Memorial Day” without “Me”

Can You Believe?

Can you believe Trump’s Memorial Day tweet about how our war dead would be so proud of his presidency? Just when you think this guy can’t get any more insensitive or egomaniacal, he goes the extra mile.

Can you believe Dana Rohrabacher saying it’s OK for people to refuse to sell their homes to same-sex couples? The National Association of Realtors couldn’t believe it when he told them – and promptly withdrew its endorsement of Rohrabacher.

Can you believe Roseanne Barr claiming Ambien was to blame for her racist rants? Sanofi, the maker of Ambien, responded, “While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication.”

Hits and Misses – the week’s best and worst moves

Hit of the Week: House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy’s refusal to buy into Trump’s Spygate fantasy. In an interview on Fox News (of all places), Gowdy (R-SC) supported the FBI’s use of an informant to interview Trump campaign officials about Russian interference in the 2016 election. It’s sad that a Republican putting country before party is news these days, but at least it does happen now and then.

Miss of the Week: The U.S. Supreme Court’s refusal to hear an appeal from an Arkansas Planned Parenthood affiliate, thereby letting stand a lower court decision upholding a state law severely restricting medication-induced abortion.

Hot House Race of the Week

It is hot, hot, hot in our state, particularly in the 39th, 48th, and 49th Congressional districts. California Democrats could flip these three seats and as many as six others in November, but only if we get out the vote in June. That’s next Tuesday, June 5th. My PAC for a Change has stayed neutral in Democratic primaries, but we’re working to pump up turnout on Tuesday, and we’ll be there to support Democratic candidates in the general election. A blue wave is coming, and it will peak in California!

Fight Back

On this week’s podcast, Nicole and I discuss how character counts in elementary school and in politics. Then I talk with former Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes about rampant corruption in the Trump White House with zero oversight from the GOP Congress, and Nicole talks with Shannon Watts of Moms Demand Action for Gun Safety in America.
