In 2018, many of us worked to flip California’s 25th Congressional District from red to blue. And while a Democrat won the district by nine points that year, we all need to gear up to defend it in a special election in March 2020, with a likely run-off in May.
There are no few candidates in the race for CA-25, a largely suburban district in northern Los Angeles County and eastern Ventura County. Republican candidates include Steve Knight, who is seeking a comeback after losing the seat in 2018, and Mike Garcia, a Navy veteran and businessman. And just to show that the CA GOP can be as crazy as the rest of the nation, George Papadopoulos, convicted criminal and former campaign advisor to Donald Trump, has declared his candidacy. And while we can laugh, Papadopoulos is likely to raise substantial funds for the race.
Democrats seeking to hold this seat include State Assemblymember Christy Smith. Smith is a solid candidate who has shown her ability to win elections. She had won endorsements from Dianne Feinstein, Kamala Harris, more than a dozen California House members, Governor Gavin Newsom and many state officials. Also in the Democratic race is Cenk Uygur, a former TV commentator.
Special elections are hard to predict and can result in unexpected outcomes because of low turnout. You can expect to see PAC for a Change fighting hard to keep this district in the blue column.
